October EdTech Update: Small Steps Toward More Intentional Technology Use
Finding time to explore new technology during the school year can be tough. October’s ECMECC Tech Integration Newsletter brings together learning opportunities, classroom resources, and conversations to help you choose a useful next step.
This month’s focus: building AI literacy, exploring new Google features, and keeping human judgment at the center of technology use.
Build Your AI Skills, One Bite at a Time
The ECMECC + Google + ISTE AI Educator Series continues this fall with free, flexible professional learning. Each micro-module takes 20 minutes or less, so you can choose topics that fit your needs and schedule. Join a live session or catch up through recordings and guided lessons. Combine any three modules to earn a certificate for one hour of CEUs!
October and November topics include Gemini Notebook, adapting materials, evaluating resources and claims, and creating scaffolds to support reading. Registration and on-demand options are linked in the newsletter.
Explore What’s New in Google
This month’s Google updates highlight ways to generate slide presentations with Gemini, turn slides into videos with AI voiceovers, and create visuals alongside text in Google Docs.
The newsletter includes directions to get you started and identifies features that require Workspace for Education Plus. As you explore, keep a familiar question in mind: How could this help me teach more effectively or support student learning? Review generated content for accuracy and make it your own.
Make AI Expectations Clear
What does acceptable AI use look like for a particular assignment? How should students explain the help they received?
The featured Transparency Support tool helps teachers communicate expectations and students describe their AI use. You’ll also find Day of AI resources for grades 3–5 that introduce AI literacy without requiring students to use AI tools.
Bring Digital Citizenship Into the Conversation
With Digital Citizenship Week, October 19–23, approaching, this is a good time to plan a classroom conversation. Explore the free Common Sense resources linked in the newsletter, then look for ways to carry those habits into everyday learning.
Keep Learning With Integrate This!
Catch up on podcast conversations, preview upcoming guests, and explore the Integrate This! blog and TikTok for more ideas and practical demonstrations.
You don’t have to try everything. Pick one resource, one learning opportunity, or one conversation that connects to your classroom—and start there.
